Last night an elderly motorist caused panic when he realised he was heading in the wrong direction on the Naas motorway and decided to turn back into on-coming traffic.

Instead of continuing on the motorway until the next exit, the un-named motorist stopped his car and turned around to face on-coming traffic head-on. Thankfully, no-one was seriously injured… or killed for that matter.

The motorist is thought to have joined the motorway at the Naas exit on the Dublin to Waterford road where he began heading southbound. However, when he reached the Leighlin Bridge near Carlow, he realised he had gone to far.

This was when he doubled back and began driving straight into on-coming traffic.

According to the Irish Independent, the motorist came into contact with up to five other vehicles but only caused minor exterior damage to the other cars.

Wing mirrors were apparently clipped and a few dents were caused but thankfully nothing too serious happened. Well, apart from the bloke driving the wrong way down the motorway, obviously.

A Garda traffic unit managed to catch up to the motorist after blocking off a section of the road just north of Castledermot. The man was then brought to Athy Garda station.

According to a source on the scene, “It was a genuine case of panic setting in”.
