Meet the Bridgestone airless tyre, which will bring an end to flat tyres and high-speed blowouts, according to the Japanese company.

There’s nothing worse than having to pull over to the side of the road to change a tyre while other traffic zips past you, secretly taunting you – unless you’re a leggy blonde of course.

But that could all be a thing of the past as Bridgestone says its ground breaking new airless tyre prototype never goes flat. So what is it made from if it has no air?

Well, the tyre is made from a recyclable plastic resin weaved into a mesh of spokes that supports the tread of the tyre. You’re probably thinking that a mesh of spokes sounds more like a wheel for a bicycle, but it’s these spokes that act as the tyre’s air.

The spokes are designed in such a way so that they flex without the whole wheel collapsing.

A Bridgestone spokesman said: “There is no need to periodically refill the tyres with air, meaning they require less maintenance.

“At the same time the worry of punctures is eliminated. Non-pneumatic tyres have less impact on the environment than today’s conventional tyres.

“The concept tyre could prove to be a viable and more environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional tyres in the future.”

There’s just one downside; what will happen to those helpless leggy blondes stranded on the side of the road that we mentioned earlier?

They’ll be gone the way of the dodo soon enough.
