Giving up cigarettes will do wonders for your health and your pocket too. One Irishman found out the financial benefits of giving up the little cancer sticks first hand after he bought a lottery ticket with money that he would usually spend on smokes. From the ticket, Brendan Riordan, 28, won a tidy $10m (€7.59m) and he is set to see a lot more money continuing to roll in for some time to come.

Brendan, originally from Co. Cavan, bought the ‘Win For Life Spectacular’ scratch-off lottery ticket from his local Irish mini-mart – keeping it in the family and all that. However, he won’t be able to withdraw all of his money in one go and fill a small swimming pool with $5 bills. That’s because he is going to receive his win in instalments.

Brendan will receive the minimum prize of $10m over the course of 20 annual instalments. These instalments consist of $520,000 (€395,000) each, or $337,256 (€256,000) after tax.

The good news continues for Brendan as once he’s been paid the minimum prize, he will continue to receive an annual cheque for life and could end up winning more than $25m (€19m) in total.

Now that would make you want to quit smoking.
