Have you heard about the assassination attempt on the Pope that is suspected to happen within the next year? It’s got Italy a tad worried.
During the week we brought you the news that 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI would like to come to Ireland “sooner rather than later”. However, it has been revealed that an anonymous letter sent directly to the Holy Father warns of an assassination attempt.
The Vatican has already said that the letter claiming of an assassination attempt on the Pope is “devoid of reality”. Well, that’s him coming over here out the window.
The Italian daily newspaper ‘Il Fatto Quotidiano’ broke the news and it has sent Italy into an unholy mess. The unsigned letter was published in full in the newspaper and interestingly enough it was written in German – the Pope’s mother tongue.
The letter quotes the Archbishop of Palermo, Paolo Romeo, as predicting that the Pontiff would be topped-off within the next 12 months. However, yesterday Cardinal Romeo said he has never heard of anything so ludicrous. “It is so outside of reality that it should not be given any consideration,” he said.
It does look as though the letter in question has got the Vatican worried.
The Vatican’s spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi, has been keeping fairly tight lipped about the whole situation, “[The letter is] so incredible that we cannot comment on it”.
“It seems to me something that is so far from reality that I don’t even want to address it,” he said. “It seems an incredible story and I don’t want to comment.”
Strange to see them keeping so quiet about it. Maybe they know something we don’t?
