If you’re single but looking for something to pass the time today, then we’ve got things covered with JOE’s five alternative things to do on Valentine’s Day.

It’s possibly the single most consumer-driven holiday on the calendar, but sometimes you can’t help but feel like you should be doing something on Valentine’s Day – even if you’re single.

Find love in… the supermarket, of all places

For some reason the big supermarket chains have really pushed the boat out this Valentine’s Day. Tesco hosted a ‘Love is in the Aisles’ night yesterday where singles will be paired together for the chance to win a meal in a top Dublin restaurant.

Superquinn also cashed in on the Valentine’s theme as they host, ‘the original supermarket matchmaking “Singles Night” today (Valentine’s Day) in eight specially selected stores. Stores in Swords, Sundrive, Heuston, Rathgar, Rathborne, Ranelagh, Waterford and Kilkenny will host the event where the good old traffic light system will be in place. Red for no, green for go… and all that. Things kick off at 5pm so we’d advise you to get there early – a sniper always scouts for the best vantage point.

Watch Barcelona v Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League

Your mates in relationships will be tied up with ‘the ball and chain’ tonight, as they watch The Notebook and eat in an incredibly expensive restaurant. You, on the other hand, can sit back, relax and watch Barcelona as they take on Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Why not find out which of your mates have Sky+’ed the match and tease them with updates all through the night.

Head out to Brendan Courtney’s Anti-Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day

Brendan Courtney’s “All The Single People” is a Valentine’s night out that takes single people into consideration. If you’re sick of the usual dinner and movie lark and you’re just looking for a good night out having the craic, then head out to Cafe en Seine. Tickets for the night are on sale at Ticketmaster.ie for €20, but you can buy three for two and give the spare one to your single mate. You can read more about the night here, as JOE managed to get an interview with the main man of the hour, Brendan Courtney.

Get your single mates together for a game of 5-a-side astro

If you and your mates couldn’t give a toss about Barcelona or Bayer Leverkusen playing in the Champions League on Tuesday night, then get together and play your own footie tournament down at the local astro turf pitch.

If you can’t spend a night with a lady friend, you might as well spend it having a bit of crack with the lads. It will help you forget about the stupid holiday anyway.

Take the night off for some you time

No, not that kind of you time. At the end of the day it’s just another Tuesday. Odds are, most of you are in work tomorrow, so why go to the effort of heading out on the town (midweek) spending money you could probably do with saving. Why not stay in and get cracking on that DVD box set you’ve been staring at for the past few months. Or buy a piece of steak the size of your face and enjoy a good home cooked meal while you feel good about your yourself. All in front of the games console, of course.
