The former South African president Nelson Mandel has been taken to hospital due to stomach issues.
The current South African president, Jacob Zuma, issued a statement today in which he asked for the former president’s privacy to be respected. It is not know where the 93-year-old is being treated or how serious the problem really is.
Mandela’s public appearances have become a fairly rare occurrence as his health continues to worsen. Last year, Mr Mandela was admitted to hospital for a few days with an acute respiratory infection. Mandela managed to over come the infection, however he is now suffering with these new stomach problems.
Mr Mandela was voted in as South Africa’s first black president back in 1994. That was only after Mandela spent 27 years in prison for fighting against the country’s racist apartheid regime.
Mandela eventually won a Nobel peace prize for his struggle.
Let’s hope he gets better soon.
