Have you ever gotten a friend request from someone famous, only to find out that it’s actually just some fat bloke in his bedroom? Well now you’ll know who the real celebs are thanks to Facebook’s new verified accounts.

Today, Facebook launched a new feature that will help people find the authentic accounts of celebrities and other high-profile people and businesses on Facebook.

So, how are you going to know who’s the real deal and who is just an impostor? Here’s what the lads at Facebook have to say: “Verified Pages have a small, blue check mark beside their name on timelines, in search results, and elsewhere on Facebook.”

Now, before you get excited at the prospect of having a little blue tick beside your name, like Twitter, the verified accounts will only be rolled out to the people with the most followers, for starters.

“Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences. This update is rolling out to profiles as well.”

The little blue tick will feature on the pages of the verified person you’re looking for, as well in search results. Sounds like it could be a handy little tool – even if it’s totally robbed from Twitter – but you can also expect a tirade of abuse from 14-year-old girls wondering why their pages haven’t been verified yet.

“OMG hunzz, whn wil FB verify my acc? 🙁 no luv…,” or something along those lines.

At least it will give Emmet Purcell something else to write about…
