Recently, JOE’s Oisín Collins was down at the Mondello Park International Race Circuit to have a look at some cool VW vans. Here’s how he got on.
You might be a bit sceptical hearing that a van could beat a Golf GTI or a Golf R32 in a race, but believe me when I say the VW Caddy Racer most definitely can. The Caddy Racer has a 4-cylinder, 16-valve 2.0 litre engine and it takes corners better than most conventional racing cars, while being faster than them too (and there’s even video evidence to prove it).
The Caddy Racer demonstration was the centrepiece of a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle media event where the entire range of the commercial lifestyle fleet was showcased to journalists from around Ireland, including myself of course.
After we were taken for a spin around the Mondello Circuit in the Caddy Racer we were let loose on the rest of the Volkswagen Commercial fleet. Now, when you hear of a ‘commercial fleet’ you probably think that it’s nothing more than just a bunch of boring old workman’s vans. Well, the VW fleet is much more than just work vans.

Need a package delivered in a hurry? This is the van for you
The fleet includes the Transporter, the Crafter, the Caddy, the Caravelle and the rugged off-road Amarok, which is perfect for the outdoor adventurer and surfer alike.
Then you have the likes of the VW California, which is the ultimate camper van perfect for any festival lover. The California can only be described as a house (or hotel) on wheels because it has everything from two double beds, a sink, a cooker and more hidden extras then a James Bond car. Seriously, Q would be impressed. So as you can see there’s much more to these vehicles than just ‘work’.
For some of you out there your van is your office so why would you want to drive around all day in a boring old cubicle when you could have a top of the range VW Transporter with all the trimmings?
Van drivers are one group of motorists that often go overlooked when it comes to style and comfort but the VW Commercial Fleet takes the needs of the everyday man into consideration. Finally! Like we said the VW Transporter isn’t just a cubicle on wheels and come the end of 2012 you’ll be able to buy the Transporter in not just one but three different trim specs.
There really is so much that the Commercial Fleet has to offer, so if cars aren’t your thing then head over to the VW Commercial Vehicles website to find out more (like how to get a full comprehensive service on any VW van for just €129).
Keep an eye out over the coming days for a little video of JOE’s day down in Mondello with the VW Caddy Racer.
