Reports today suggest that Dublin City Council is considering whether or not to raise the clamping fee by another €50 euro.

If you’re parking in Dublin City for whatever reason you’d want to make sure to throw a few quid in the ticket machine first, because if a new proposal goes ahead it may cost you €130 to get the little yellow triangle removed.

The proposed raise will see the removal fee jump from €80 to €130. If the plan does go ahead it will see the first price hike in city clamping since 1998. You learn something new everyday.

Parking Appeals Officer William Kielty said that compliant motorists – like you and me, ahem – are being forced to subsidise offenders, because of the increased costs of providing the service, reports the Irish Examiner. However, it currently costs around one euro for about half an hours parking on Dublin city’s streets, so you can see why some people choose to park and leg-it.

However, the godfather of Irish motoring, AA director of policy Conor Faughnan, claimed that it’s simply a money-making move.

“Let’s be clear about this, there is no justification for this other than that Dublin City Council wants more money,” he said to the Irish Examiner.

“Dublin City Council makes nearly €130m per annum in legal parking fees, and that’s where clamping pays you back.”
