The iconic Empire State Building in New York is set to go under the DIY knife as it receives it first ever technological face-lift.
New York’s second tallest building will soon receive its first ever face-lift – of sorts – as all of its 400 lamps are being replaced with over 1,000 highly-efficiency LED lights.
The owners of the building must have gone on an energy saving buzz recently, as the new lights will save the building around 75 per cent on its annual electricity bills.
According to AM-New York, installing all 1,200 LED lights will cost several million dollars, however, they’ll pay for themselves within six years. So the several million-dollar hole in the pocket actually won’t be too bad in the long run.
“What we’ll be able to do by lighting the mast is incredibly cool,” said Anthony E. Malkin, president of Malkin Holdings, which partly owns the building.
He added: “We’ll maintain the traditional iconic international recognition that the Empire State Building has.”
The new lights will be able to produce spectacular light displays over the New York skyline and they’ll last up to six times longer than the existing bulbs.
