Survey: Dodging DIY could cost you up to €5,000 per year

Homeowners over in the UK are throwing away thousands of pounds every year by not doing their own DIY. We hope that’s not the case for us here in Ireland, but here’s what was said.

A recent survey carried out in the UK by Tarmac, the construction suppliers company, found that some households waste thousands of pounds every year because they don’t want to do their own DIY for one reason or another.

That’s right, the survey shows that 32 per cent of people say they avoid DIY because they’re worried about making mistakes and 23 per cent say they find it too complicated, according to Bedford Today. Sure the old ‘smash walls first, ask questions about structural support later’ never fails (most of the time).

Julia Kendell, celebrity DIY expert and star of BBC One’s DIY SOS said: “If we took the time to actually learn a few basics and had a bit of patience instead of giving up at the first hurdle or not even starting in the first place, we could actually surprise ourselves with our skill and save money at the same time.”

The research was initially carried out to look into people’s reluctance to carry out maintenance, repairs and renovation around the home and if a level head, some encouragement and DIY know-how could actually save us money in the long run.

The results were pretty clear. By tackling the DIY jobs yourself and leaving out the handyman you could save nearly €5,000 per year. That’s a fair bit of change we think you’ll agree.
