Bavaria City Racing is literally around the corner, so if we haven’t convinced you to go already here’s another reason: to welcome home Japanese racer Gary Thompson.
Some of you won’t be familiar with the name Gary Thompson, which might be for one of two reasons. Firstly, Gary has been racing in Asia for the past four years, so it’s not as if he’s on RTÉ everyday. The second reason you might not know Gary yet is because he’s just 19 and he’s already tearing up the Asian racing scene.
The youngster from Donabate has been busy making a name for himself in the prestigious Japanese Formula 3 series to be precise. He also became the first ever driver to drive a Formula 1 car in Taiwan. This was when he drove the KCMG two-seater performance F1 Car at the Penbay International Circuit in 2011. He regularly tests and demonstrates the motor at the Yas Marina Circuit, in Abu Dhabi – did we mention he’s only 19?
Now although Gary is busy doing the Irish proud over in Asia he’s managed to take some time out of his busy schedule to show us what he’s made of.
As a matter of fact, Bavaria City Racing will be the first time since his karting days that Thompson gets behind the wheel of a racing car on home soil. So it’s a momentous occasion for all involved. Who knows, maybe we’ll see an Irishman in a proper F1 car the next time Bavaria City Racing rolls around?
“I’m excited to be part of the Bavaria line up,” said Thompson. “It’s a great event for Ireland and the city of Dublin, where everyone can get involved and experience the sound of motor racing! This will be my first time driving a racing car in Ireland, which is great to finally do at such a big event, in front of my home crowd too.”

If you want to see Gary, along with the likes of Jenson Button and his Vodafone McLaren F1 team, Eugene Laverty and the Aprilia SuperBike team as well as a whole host of others, then head along to Bavaria City Racing Dublin on June 3 over the Bank Holiday weekend. With 96 per cent of the event free, why wouldn’t you?
Bavaria City Racing comes to Dublin on June 3. The event is FREE to attend, but fans who want to get that bit closer to the action can avail of tickets to the premium performance zones.
