Councillor says potholes should replace speed bumps

An Irish councillor has said that potholes, or “subterranean speed ramps” as he put it, should replace speed bumps. It actually doesn’t sound too bad.

It was the Fianna Fail councillor, PJ Kelly, who suggested the idea of replacing some speed bumps with new fangled “subterranean speed ramps” during a council meeting last week.

According to Cllr Kelly, using potholes instead of speed ramps could be a “life saver”, and although potholes do untold damage to your car, he kind of has a point.

Some speed ramps on Irish are nothing more than a slight elevation which most boy-racers see as an opportunity to get a little air-born in their done up Starlets. So sticking a few holes in the ground will certainly do the trick for them.

However, if you’re in favour of the subterranean speed ramp idea then you may have to take it up with someone yourself, as Cllr Kelly described his own comments as “flippant”, according to this morning’s Irish Sun.

He said: “I made the suggestion on the basis that it was about as intelligent as others that were being made.

“When I mentioned subterranean speed ramps there was 90 seconds of shocked silence, which in the council chamber is somewhat of a rarity.”

Say what you will, but we think the idea has certainly got some steam behind it. Well, until a subterranean speed ramp destroys the underside of our motor that is.
