Last night, electricity around the country was demanded in waves that coincided with our first Euro 2012 match againstCroatia, according to EirGrid.

EirGrid’s National Control Centre reports that data recorded during the match shows that it actually had a significant impact on electricity demand around the country. Who’d of thunk it?

Basically, at the start of the match, demand for electricity dropped by around 3 per cent (75 megawatts) as people sat down to watch TV together and stopped blow drying their hair and whatnot.

During half time demand for electricity rose by about 60 megawatts as people made a mad dash for their fridges and beer coolers, but demand slowed down again once the second half kicked off.

When referee Bjorn Kuipers blew the final whistle, demand again rose by a whopping 170 megawatts, which is the equivalent of about 7 per cent of electricity demand at the time, reports TheJournal.ie.

We’d say it was a stressful day for the lads working in Electric Ireland and the likes. They wouldn’t of known whether to watch the dials on front of them or the football on the TV… until about the 80th minute.
