According to reports you can move into Barack Obama’s gaff and live like a president. But do you get your own room or will you have to sleep on the sofa in the Oval Office?

So will I be getting my own room in the White House?

Sadly, you won’t be getting your own room in the White House and you certainly won’t be staying on the sofa in the Oval Office – not that you’d want to, seeing as Bill Clinton probably conducted some ‘business’ on it. As a matter of fact, you won’t even be getting close to the White House. That’s because it’s Obama’s old place in New York that’s currently up for rent.

Oh, well thanks for getting my hopes up. So where exactly is this gaff and what is it like?

Well it’s located on 109th Street on Manhattan’s upper west side, which is often regarded as being home to New York City’s cultural and artistic folk. So if you’re a dab hand at dabbing a brush in paint then this could be the place for you.

The gaff is a two-bedroom apartment that has been fully renovated and it comes with “a galley kitchen, generous closet space, and high ceilings”. It’s not the biggest apartment in the world but it does come with an “unbeatable dinner conversation”, if you want one of those.

That all sounds good but can I afford it?

If you have $2,400 a month to spend on a place to live then yes, you can afford it.

They want $2,400? That’s scandalous! What’s that in euro?

It’s roughly €1,970 per month. When Barack was renting out the place back in the 80’s he paid roughly $360 (€290) per month for it. Now, you might be wondering where the massive inflation in price came from, but think about it; how many people can say that the most powerful man in the world once called your place home?

I suppose I see your point. Still, it must take one hell of a sales pitch to sell something that expensive?

Well you can judge for yourself. The advert, which is accompanied by photos, is up on the CitiHabitats website and it reads as follows: “Live Like the President!!! Barack Obama’s former apartment is now on the market for rent. Be a part of history and live where the President lived while he attended Columbia University.

“Who knows, you just might end up in the White House one day. The apartment is a two bedroom, one bath located on West 109 Street. Fully renovated with lots of charm – including exposed brick, high ceilings, a marble bath and hardwood floors.

“The apartment also features a galley kitchen, generous closet space, and best of all, its unbeatable dinner conversation! Call today to see this two bedroom home – it’s unique in so many ways.”

So if I move in, I “might end up in the White House one day”?

Well, as we said above, the likelihood of getting anywhere close to the White House is pretty slim. Considering the rate they are charging, the poor house might be more likely.
