A recent ‘high-profile’ recruitment drive by the Irish Catholic Church in the diocese of Elphin failed to get a single response. How embarrassing.
Have you ever held a party where no one showed up? That’s exactly how the church is feeling out West after it held a massive recruitment drive by placing ads in newspapers and newsletters across the diocese of Elphin, but to no avail.
The recruitment drive was held across Sligo, Roscommon, Westmeath, and Galway and it was aimed at getting young men to join the priesthood. However, the ideas of the priesthood obviously don’t look that appealing at the moment even though there are over 400,000 people on the dole.
One of the organisers, Fr Jim Murray, said, “We have heard nothing back so far.
“We had information on posters, newsletters and local newspapers. It’s worrying and slightly discouraging.”
“It is certainly worrying, but you have to think the hand of God is at work. Some people are being called but they’re not hearing the call because of the stress of modern life. Certainly, the abuse scandals have had an impact.”
