We were all glued to Gavin Noble’s fantastic performance in the men’s Triathlon race at the Olympics this morning. Bernard Dunne was too.

The Olympic Triathlon race is not for the faint hearted. It consists of a 1.5 kilometre swim, a 40 k bike and they round it off with a 10 k run. With the winner, Britain’s Alistair Brownlee, doing all that in a frankly ridiculous time of 1:46:25, it is probably the hardest event in the entire Games.

Ireland had one competitor, Gavin Noble, and he performed beyond expectations. After a good swim and great bike section, the Fermanagh man briefly led the race before finishing a creditable 23rd, just over three minutes behind the eventual winner.

We, as very sedentary keyboard bashers, watched in awe of Noble and the rest, but even world champions in other sports were impressed.

Bernard Dunne watched the race and the former boxing world champ would rather get back in the ring than try to compete in a Triathlon.

We have to agree.
