Ireland may have once been the land of saints and scholars, however, according to a poll carried out by Gallup and Red C it looks like we’re not keeping the faith anymore.
Are you religious? Do you go to mass every Sunday? Or do you even just acknowledge The Big Fella when something unexpected happens? Your parents might, but a growing trend suggests that religion is slowly on its way out here in Ireland. We assume that’s because of MTV, video games and the likes…
Only 47 per cent of people here consider themselves to be religious, which places Ireland 43rd out of 57 countries that were questioned by the Gallup and Red C poll. This figure can be compared with the last time one of these polls was carried out and it makes for some interesting reading.
Back in 2005, 69 per cent of Irish people considered themselves to be religious, now only seven years later that’s dropped by 22 per cent.
On the other side of things, Ghana is considered to be the most religious country worldwide with 96 per cent of residents claiming to be religious, while China is the least religious country.
So, is this surprising? Well, not really…
