A man over in China has finally finished making himself a pair of bionic hands after a fishing accident blew both of his off.
Sun Jifa, 51, tragically lost both of his hands eight years ago when a homemade explosive device used for fishing blew up prematurely. This sadly left Sun without any hands to use for working on the family farm. However, instead of forking over thousands for professionally built prosthesis from the local hospital, Sun decided to make his very own fully functioning hands.
Sun spent a total of eight years making prototypes that were ultimately unsuccessful, however, he finally made a pair of metal hands that can grip and hold thanks to a series of wires and pulleys inside the forearm.
‘I control them with movements from my elbows and I can work, love normally and feed myself just like anyone else,’ explained Sun.
‘The only drawback is that steel is quite heavy so they’re tiring to wear and get hot or cold in the extremes of summer and winter.
‘I made this from scrap metal for virtually nothing. There is no need to pay hospitals a fortune,’ he said.
Sun now hopes to develop even more bionic arms for similarly disabled people.
