It looks like Malaga is the favoured holiday spot for us Irish, but the figures show that we still can’t get enough of Britain.

Have you been lucky enough to get away on a sun holiday this year? If so, chances are that you may have travelled to sunny Spain, or Malaga to be exact, as it’s been revealed that Irish holidaymakers booked almost 29,000 flights to the Costa del Sol this year alone.

The new data, released by Visa Europe, shows the top ten destinations for Irish people who booked foreign holidays with their Visa.

Unsurprisingly, the UK remains the top overall destination for Irish people with Heathrow coming in first, Gatwick second, Stansted fourth, Manchester sixth, Birmingham seventh while Edinburgh came in eighth. The UK took up over half of the top ten destinations, actually.

The other destinations included on the list were Malaga (third), Faro… in Portugal (fifth), Paris (ninth) and Alicante rounded off the list in 10th.

“The popularity of the FA Premiership, Six Nations and European rugby fixtures has seen demand surge for UK destinations this year,” said Conor Langford, vice-president Ireland, Visa Europe.

“The poor weather this summer has also meant that sun destinations like Malaga, Faro and Alicante remain popular with Irish holidaymakers.”
