According to reports, computer hackers somewhere in the world (Ireland, presumably) have created the first computer virus as Gaeilge.
The general rule on avoiding computer viruses is to avoid weird porn as the weirder the porn the more likely you are to catch something – so keep it normal. The second most important rule when trying to avoid viruses is to avoid anything that’s in a language you don’t know or understand.
That’s why you might be forgiven for contracting something from an Irish language virus that’s currently doing the rounds. Sure isn’t it just a harmless language spoken by the friendliest people in the world? It wouldn’t be used to deceive people, would it?
There’s someone, somewhere in the world who has been using a free internet based translation service to make a fake warning alerting the user that their computer has been locked because they’ve accessed some potentially dodgy porn.
It then instructs the user to send €100 via digital transfer in order to have the computer unlocked. Presumably, you’ll be losing out on more than €100 once you send the transfer.
However, as we said above, the crooks in question have been using a translation service of some sort as reports claim that only about 60 per cent of the scam actually makes sense as Gaeilge.
Apparently it’s a very convincing scam with fancy logos and ‘seals of approval’ stamped all over it. So just watch out if you see an Irish language pop-up warning you of imminent danger. And make sure to steer clear of any ‘dodgy porn’ from now on…
