Chris O’Dowd tweeted his delight about being given the Freedom of Roscommon last night, even though he has no idea what privileges he will be granted upon receiving the prestigious honour.
The Boyle native has gone from budding actor and comedian to genuine bona fide worldwide superstar in the last couple of years but he has never forgotten his roots, putting his hometown firmly on the map by filming the hugely successful Moone Boy series there.
To pay him back for all he’s done for the county, Roscommon Mayor Tom Crosby bestowed the honour on the former Rossie minor goalkeeper, who was naturally delighted with the news, even though he isn’t fully aware of how it might affect him whenever he finds himself at home.

Will he be able to do a Bono on it and graze his sheep on green areas in the city (in the Hyde perhaps)? Will he be given a sash to wear while he struts down the streets of Boyle?
Or will it, as O’Dowd suggests in his tweet, involve ‘maidens’ in some way, a predicament that as the picture at the top of the page suggests, O’Dowd isn’t exactly unfamiliar with.
