Seán FitzPatrick, the former chairman of Anglo Irish Bank, has been found not guilty of providing unlawful financial assistance to bank customers.

The jury finally returned to the courtroom shortly after 5pm this evening and acquitted FitzPatrick on all 10 charges he faced.

The verdict was a majority, rather than a unanimous, decision.

FitzPatrick remained expressionless as the verdict was read and was told by Judge Martin Nolan that he would not have to return to court on Thursday.

The jury will resume its deliberations to decide whether Willie McAteer and Pat Whelan are guilty of providing illegal financial assistance to the Maple Ten and the Quinn family to buy shares in the bank in 2008.
