Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a major gangland figure was shot dead in Dublin this afternoon.

The 39-year-old man was well known to authorities having twice stood trial for a murder in the capital a couple of years ago, but he was acquitted.

The shooting occurred on Cooley Road in Drimnagh shortly after 3pm, with the scene preserved and Gardaí hoping that witnesses come forward.
