Despite the doom and gloom of the recession, Irish people are the most likely to give to charities during Christmas.

According to the annual World Giving Index, Ireland was top of the list when it came to giving to charities. The index reports that 79 per cent of Irish people forked over some change to worthy causes over the past month, so fair play to you if you did. Our figure is actually way above the world average of just 28 per cent.

Ireland’s charitable offerings are actually up on last year’s recording of 66 per cent. We’re the top of the list when it comes to giving to charities and we’re also second when it comes to giving to each other.

The annual World Giving Index found Australia to be the ‘most generous country on earth’ followed by Ireland, Canada and New Zealand.

Around 155,000 people were polled in 146 countries for the report.
