Getting stuck for WiFi is a right pain in the arse, but from today you’ll be able to get free internet access in a few different locations across Dublin City Centre.
How does free WiFi sound? Pretty damn good, right? Well from today you’ll be able to roam around the city and access your favourite websites without having to pay a penny. It’s all thanks to a Spanish company called Gowex, who have provided the service free of charge to the council.
The free version of the service allows you to download at a speed of 512Kbps and an upload at a speed of 128Kbps. You can also pay €5 for 24 hours and get a faster download speed of 3Mbps, or you can pay just €8 a month for a year and get a 6Mbps download speeds.
So how will you know where to look? Well, there’s a handy Google Map that tells you exactly where to go, or you can just keep your eye out for one of the different 8-bit characters (pictured above) that are stuck to various walls in the city.
There’s a GAA player, a street cleaner and even a pyjama-wearing girl, just to name a few.

The service will be rolled out over the next few weeks in the following locations:
Barnardo’s Square
Clarendon Street
Frontage to the Convention Centre Dublin
Grafton Street
Henry Street
Merrion Park
O’Connell Street Plaza/GPO
Outdoor amphitheatre located at Civic Offices
St Patrick’s Park
Smithfield Square
Temple Bar Square
Wolfe Tone Square
However, for now, the free service is available at the Civic Offices Amphitheatre, Wood Quay, St Patrick’s Park and Barnardo’s Square.
