Met Eireann declares ‘Status Orange’ warning as blizzard like conditions on the way

It might seem fairly quiet out there now, but it looks like that could be just the calm before the storm.

Met Éireann are warning that it will be extremely windy later on this evening with widespread showers of hail, sleet and snow a real possibility for tonight. It looks as though it could get fairly manky for anyone living on higher ground, as the snow and sleet will be more likely to stick in these regions.

A ‘Status Orange’ warning has been issued with Met Éireann saying, “extremely windy with some severe, possibly damaging gusts. Strong to gale force westerly winds will produce gusts of 110 to 130 km/h in Connacht and Donegal, while in Munster, Leinster, Cavan and Monaghan gusts of 90 to 110 km/h are expected.”

There’s also a slight risk of thunder in some places (remember last week’s strikes in Cork?), so we wouldn’t advise any games of golf unless you want to end up like Fr. Stone… from Father Ted.

According to Met Éireann, “The strong winds and snow showers will produce very poor conditions at higher levels, with the possibility of some blizzard like conditions. Lowest temperatures tonight of -1 to +2 degrees, with the risk of icy patches.”

With the weather looking fairly poor tonight, you can be sure that driving conditions won’t be great tomorrow morning, so make sure to get up a little bit earlier to clear off the car windows – unless you want to be that guy.
