An investigation is underway at a Californian nursing home after a 911 dispatcher advised a nurse to preform CPR on a dying woman, only for the nurse to refuse.
The elderly woman, 87-year-old Lorraine Bayless, collapsed in the dining room of Glenwood Gardens in Bakersfield California last week. Naturally, the nurses at the centre called 911 in order to get an ambulance, but when operator Tracey Halvorson told the nurse that the dying woman urgently needed CPR, the nurse said she couldn’t do it due to ‘protocol’.
‘I understand if your boss is telling you, you can’t do it,’ the dispatcher said to the nurse. ‘But… as a human being, you know, is there anybody that’s willing to help this lady and not let her die?’
‘Not at this time,’ the nurse answered. You can hear the full conversation in the video above. Ms Bayless’ death has sparked outrage over in the US, but Glenwood Gardens home has defended the nurse insisting she followed the correct protocol.
