We like to think that our game of hurling is one of the best sports games in the world, and today it got a ringing endorsement from All Black star Dan Carter.
By Declan Whooley
The Crusaders out-half is familiar with the small ball game having been given a hurley and sliothar during one of his playing visits to Ireland in the past, and today remarked on the numbers of Irish in the Christchurch area, armed with hurley and ball.

While Carter is one of the most gifted sportsmen currently still plying their trade, he can appreciate the skills required for the game of hurling. He also tweeted a picture of himself in action during what appears to be a cold and wet winter’s day in Ireland attempting the hone his skills.

Whatever about hurling skills, Carter will hope his colleagues can improve their own fortunes after a disappointing start for the Crusaders to this season’s Super XV. They have lost both of their opening away fixtures, though the number 10 has contributed 28 of their 43 points so far.
Their first home game is against the Bulls tomorrow at the AMI Stadium in Christchurch and there may just an Irish flavour to their support.
And if things don’t improve, there are a number of hurling teams that would be more than happy to give Carter a trial at the very least. He has solid free-taker written all over him.
Hat tip to Senan Mullin and others for sending this our way.
