Polish rally driver and former Formula 1 ace Robert Kubica hit a guard rail in the Canary Islands recently that stopped him from falling off the side of a cliff.
Kubica was leading the rally of the Canary’s at the weekend when he lost control around a tight turn in the mountain section and went careering into the barrier. If the barrier didn’t stop Kubica he would have been facing a seriously long and unforgiving drop off the side of the mountain.
It’s Kubica’s second serious rally crash to date. The first occurred back in 2011 and it ended his Formula 1 career. Ironically, a crash barrier cut through Kubica’s car on that occasion causing serious harm to his legs and forearm.
Thankfully, he’s okay this time around. Speaking to reporters after the crash the Pole said, “We were not pushing really hard, I mean I just misjudged how deep downhill it was.
“Unfortunately, it is not an excuse. When we were high in speed I was lacking the rear grip, especially when we were downhill and I should have taken account of this, but unfortunately I didn’t.”
