The Boys in Green are taking on Austria tonight in the Aviva, but there’s been some terrible news back in the central European country.

A massive motorway pile up involving over 100 vehicles on the Austrian A1 west of Vienna has claimed at least one life. The crash scene, which stretches for more than 2km, was caused by a cold snap that has engulfed the country.

According to reports from officials, the accident occurred near St Poelten, about 60km from the Vienna, and involved around 40 lorries and 60 cars.

Scenes from the crash

“One person died and several others are still trapped in the wrecks of their cars,” said an official.

“It’s too early to say what exactly caused the pile-up. But we had heavy snowfall this morning and the highway was covered in snow.”
