Pic: A new-look passport card is on the way and this is what it will look like

It'll fit into your wallet as well

It’ll fit into your wallet as well. Handy.

From mid-July onwards, citizens of Ireland will be able to avail of a new credit card-sized passport card that is being made available as a supplement to the existing passport.

Eligible for use within European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries, it will be valid for a maximum of five years and will cost €35.

The card itself looks almost exactly the same as the most important page on the existing passport and contains essential information like name, date of birth, passport number and an embedded hologram photo.

Unlike the existing passport, however, this will fit handily into your wallet, with Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan keen to point out that it will be particularly useful for young people who use their passports as identification on a night out.

A smartphone app has been launched which will allow users to apply for the passport and includes a feature which will enable users to take international standard photos of themselves and save them a trip to the chemist in the process.

The Passport card will be available from mid-July to all citizens over 18 who currently possess a valid passport.
