The speed limit could be reduced to 60km per hour on certain parts of the M50

Get ready to slow down, Dublin motorists.

The National Roads Authority in Ireland (NRA) have proposed that the speed limit on parts of the M50 be reduced as low as 60 kilometres per hour in an effort to ease traffic congestion.

According to The Irish Times, the proposals have been made in an attempt to ease the congestion which is threatening journey times, particularly in built up areas such as the Red Cow junction.

NRA Communications manager Sean O’Neill said that such a measure could help offset “the accordion effect,” where traffic congestion is caused by vehicles braking on a route with heavy traffic, which in turn causes more severe braking from vehicles further behind.

The proposals come after NRA figures revealed that traffic figures increased on all tolled roads in 2014, including increases as high as eight per cent on roads like the M1 Dundalk and N6 Galway.
