A number of men have been arrested for dissident Republican activity ahead of the visit of Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

Two men in their 20s were arrested in Co. Leitrim, and were stopped close to Glenfarne on the N16 Sligo to Blacklion Road.

Gardaí discovered a pistol and two pipe bombs in the car in which the man were travelling.

According to the Irish Independent, two Improvised Explosive Devices were made safe by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit at the scene.

Four other men – three in their 20s and one on his 60s – were arrested across Louth, Wexford and Leitrim as Gardaí received credible intelligence about a plot against the future King of England.

The four – including a known dissident Republican with previous convictions – were arrested on suspicion of “directing terrorism, membership of an unlawful organisation and possession of explosives.”

They were being questioned in Dublin last night.
