Irish man dies after taking pills he bought online

It's the first known case in Ireland

Joe Harrington

It’s the first known case in Ireland.

An Irish man in his early 20s died in May after taking slimming pills he bought over the internet.

The man death’s is being investigated by the Health Products Regulatory Authority and Garda Síochána at the moment as it’s only recently been brought to their attention.

The report found that the man had taken a weight loss drug known as Dinitrophenol (DNP) just before he died.

DNP is popular among bodybuilders because it sells itself as a substance that will help you get ripped or muscular fast.

Buying pills and medicines online or by mail order is actually illegal in Ireland and has been for over 80 years but the flow into the country is thought to be substantial.

Authorities are warning people of the dangers of using them.

Hat-tip to Irish Times.
