New initiative called ‘Pimp my Street’ launches in Cork and eyebrows have been raised

It's not exactly as it sounds

Cork is going ghetto, bai.

As part of a raft of new proposals to revitalise the city centre over the next two years, Cork City Council have launched an initiative known as ‘Pimp my Street’, a competition that will offer communities funding to improve their local area.

According to the Evening Echo, €25,000 will be set aside each year for an ‘improve my street’ competition, whereby communities pitch proposals to the Council to improve their street with five prizes to be awarded each year.

It sounds like a novel and commendable idea to us, but not surprisingly, there were a few eyebrows raised at the title of the competition, which, of course, is a reference to the once popular MTV Show ‘Pimp my Ride’.

Amongst the other recommendations, one which proposes artwork to be made out of butter wrappers at the city’s North Gate Bridge to reflect the significance of butter to Shandon sounds very interesting.

You can read about the proposals in more detail in the Evening Echo here, but from the looks of things, Ireland’s second city is going to be pimped out to a pretty significant degree over the next two years.
