Rebelling against those penalty points

Colm Boohig

They don’t call ’em the Rebel county for nothing.

Avoiding those pesky penalty points can of course be made easier by driving with care, but there is a nationwide loophole available to road offenders.

Those penalised can avoid penalty points by donating money to poor boxes and the figures for this activity have been gathered by the Department of Justice.

According to thejournal.ie, Cork has the largest number of people who donate to poor boxes, with 420 doing so from January 2014 to May 2015.

Dublin and Waterford followed closely behind, with 330 and 114 respective drivers giving money to charity in those counties.

In total, over 1,500 people made a donation in lieu of penalty points from January last year to May this year.
