A surprising number of Irish people have admitted to drinking-and-driving last year

Too many

Too many.

11% of Irish motorists had a drink before getting behind the wheel of a car last year, according to research done by the Road Safety Authority.

Some of the people surveyed had a mistaken attitude towards how many drinks are necessary before a person goes over the legal limit. One-in-five thought that one drink was okay, but one full drink – a pint of beer, a glass of wine or a measure of spirits – can put a driver over the legal limit.

The study also found that 40% of the 1000 respondents surveyed also thought it was acceptable to exceed the 100km/h speed limit.

The study also found that drivers aren’t all that fond of pedestrians, with 95% of the respondents saying that pedestrians don’t pay enough attention to the road because they are too preoccupied texting or talking on their phones.
