This seems like a no-brainer.
The disconnect between young people and politics is one that’s been discussed regularly in Ireland and the school system has responded.
According to the Irish Times, the State advisory body on the national curriculum will introduce a new “politics and society” subject is to the Leaving Cert syllabus next year.
The report says that students in around 25 schools will start studying the subject in fifth-year from 2016, and points will be awarded for the first time in 2018.
Schools will be approached about taking on the course in the coming weeks and teachers with backgrounds in politics, sociology and anthropology will be asked to deliver it.
The course will cover issues like decision-making at local and international level, human rights, globalisation and ownership of media.
A formal announcement about the new subject is expected later this week.
