This won’t go down well in many Irish quarters.
Senator David Norris has never been one to shy away from difficult subject matter and has won many fans in the process, but we don’t think his latest comment will be very well received.
The gay and civil rights activist prides himself on standing up for the minority, but his opinion of those on social welfare isn’t as empathetic.
Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast this morning, Norris said that he feels those on social welfare shouldn’t be allowed to purchase alcohol
Senator David Norris says people on welfare should not be allowed to buy drink
— Today FM News (@TodayFMNews) December 11, 2015
“I hear people on the wireless saying ‘Oh what about the poor people on the social welfare and they’ll be deprived of their few drinks’ – I don’t spend my tax dollars to buy drinks for people on social welfare” said Norris.
“I don’t think tax is for people to be drinking all the time – and I see them all around my area buying slabs of drinks”.
It’s safe to say that the statement has not been met with much support.
