Warning: Features some very unparliamentary language.
David Norris has used the Senate to fight back against his detractors over an interview he gave to Newstalk last week.
The politician had welcomed the introduction of minimum pricing for alcohol and claimed that people on social welfare should not be allowed to buy drink.
“I don’t spend my tax dollars to buy drinks for people on social welfare. I really don’t, and I resent that, I think that it’s ridiculous that tax dollars are being used to fund drinking,” he had said.
This prompted a backlash against Norris, with one national newspaper in particular – the Irish Independent – asking how a man who had legally collected a disability payment for 16 years, while out of work in Trinity College but still working as a senator, could hold such draconian views against people who are currently out of work.
Today, Norris hit back at that article, the journalist who wrote it and the ‘shemozzle’ that resulted from his comments on radio.
