Ireland’s cleanest town has been named

Tony Cuddihy

Longford has been named as Ireland’s cleanest town.

Longford has beaten the likes of Drogheda, Dún Laoghaire, Dungarvan, and Kilkenny to the title of Ireland’s cleanest town.

Of 40 towns and cities listed in 2015, not one was designated a litter blackspot although Farranree in Cork was named as Ireland’s only seriously littered town.

It’s not all good news – according to the Irish Times, organising group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) now counts three-quarters of the areas surveyed as being clean to European norms, a drop of 15% from 2014.

“After a decade of year-on-year improvement, it is disappointing to see the very high standards achieved by towns slip in a number of cases,” said Conor Horgan of IBAL.

“We may be witnessing the effect of the disappearance of town councils, or we may be getting slightly complacent. At the same time, we can say the great majority of our towns are clean. Also, it is heartening to see the problem city areas getting better — if only slowly.”
