Irish Times journalist Una Mullally describes being attacked in Dublin this evening

How can some men, young or old, think this kind of behaviour is OK?

Irish Times journalist Una Mullally has just been tweeting about a very ugly incident in Portobello, close to the Grand Canal in Dublin, this evening.

Mullally went out for a jog when nine young men on bikes physically assaulted her.

She describes how they threatened to harm her with a bicycle seat, and how her ordeal lasted between five and 10 minutes with no assistance from the public.

This is, needless to say, not an isolated incident in a city that prides itself on being safe for both its women and its men.

Una’s story is reminiscent of the experience of Jenny Stanley in late 2015.

She had written to the Irish Times to describe her experience of simply trying to get a bus home on a Saturday night in the city, and the harassment she received from gangs of young men.

We’d like to wish Una all the best in getting over this experience, and hope that people who get involved in this kind of unacceptable behaviour think twice about becoming part of this stupid pack mentality.
