PIC: This map shows how over half of Ireland’s population lives on just 3% of the island

Kind of crazy to think about.

Reddit users have been uploading maps of countries to r/DataIsBeautiful that highlight how huge subsets of a state’s population often occupy a small fraction of the land.

Using figures from the 2011 Census, ParadoxAnarchy worked out that the population of Dublin, Kildare, Limerick city, Galway city and Cork city amounts to 2,440,533 – more than half of Ireland’s 4.5 million population.

Considering that Ireland only has a handful of cities, this doesn’t sound too surprising, but it’s pretty weird to see it on a map:

Added up, the size of these five areas is 2747km², which means that roughly 53% of Ireland’s population lives on just 3% of the available land.

Kildare is a lighter shade of red than the other four to denote that population density is lower in that county.
