Standing desks are one of a number of initiatives Minister for Health Leo Varadkar plans to roll out as part of the National Physical Activity Plan, which aims to get at least half a million more Irish people taking regular exercise within ten years.
Varadkar has published details of the plan on his website today, with €5.5 million set to be ring-fenced in 2016 for plans to make exercise a normal part of everyday life and to give Irish people more opportunities to be active.
The €5.5 million in funding will be spread across three Departments and will comprise of sports measures, Healthy Ireland initiatives, Sport Ireland programme funding, and education projects.

Amongst the number of features incorporated as part of the plan is a drive to get employers to encourage healthy workplace initiatives through walking and exercise activities, standing desks and other measures.
New guidelines for sedentary behaviour are also set to be introduced, initiatives for cycling, swimming and running are also planned to build on the success of Get Ireland Walking and a new PE curriculum framework at Senior Cycle level is also set to be finalised.
