These are the cheapest and most expensive counties to buy petrol and diesel in Ireland

Conor Heneghan

Handy information for motorists.

Motorists in Mayo are getting most bang for their buck when it comes to the price of petrol and diesel according to the latest figures released by the AA.

A litre of petrol in Mayo costs an average of 122.7 cent a litre – 3.8 cent cheaper than the national average – while the average price of diesel in both Mayo and Roscommon is 106.5 cent per litre, more than six cents cheaper than the national average of 112.8 cent per litre.

Last week, we brought you a picture of a garage in Ballina that was selling diesel for under €1 a litre and as part of their survey, the AA also found a garage in Roscommon selling it at the same price.

At the other end of the scale, Donegal is the most expensive county in Ireland to buy petrol with an average price of 128.1 cent per litre, whereas Wicklow has the most expensive diesel with an average price of 116.3 cent per litre.

Laois is the second most expensive county in which to buy petrol, with Wicklow once again featuring high up the list in third place.

The fall in the price of crude oil internationally is benefitting Irish motorists at the petrol pumps, although the AA revealed that higher taxes mean that the price of petrol and diesel isn’t as low as it was the last time the price of oil fell to these levels.

Commenting on the figures, Conor Faughnan of the AA said: “There is quite a bit of variation and we should be careful about reading too much into it. Even so there are parts of the country where various factors and local competition mean that drivers are getting better value.”

Regarding the tax placed on fuel by the Irish government, he added: “These taxes were applied in response to the economic crisis.

“The crisis has now passed, meaning these extra taxes have essentially fulfilled their initial purpose. There’s simply no reason why these taxes shouldn’t be reduced.”
