TG4’s Irish language leader’s debate has been called off because two of the party leaders don’t speak Irish well enough

There had been plans for TG4 to host a follow-up to last week’s chaotic TV3 debate conducted entirely through Irish, but it seems that not all Irish party leaders are proficient enough as Gaeilge for it to actually work.

The plans have been scrapped after it became clear that neither Joan Burton nor Gerry Adams were fluent enough to discuss the issues in Irish.

According to The Irish Times, Labour proposed that Aodhán O’Ríordáin, the outgoing Minister for Equality, be allowed to debate in Burton’s stead but this resolution, among several others, was not accepted by all parties.
