Tony Cuddihy

Tesco Ireland have recalled one of their products over fears that that it contains dangerous bacteria.

The supermarket chain have recalled their range of Tesco roast garlic and herb butter logs over fears that they contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria known to cause food poisoning in pregnant women and the vulnerable.

“We have recalled our Tesco roast garlic and herb butter log 100g after a potential low level Listeria Monocytogenes contamination issue was discovered at the factory in Westmeath where the product is produced,” a Tesco spokesperson confirmed to JOE on Wednesday.

“Whilst we have no evidence to suggest these Tesco products have been contaminated, we have recalled the product as a precautionary measure.

“We are asking customers who have purchased affected products to return it to store for a full refund.”

Listeriosis is mild in most people and causes symptoms including a high temperature, vomiting and diarrhoea. These symptoms usually pass within three days and there is rarely the need for medical treatment.

The infection can be more severe in rare cases, however, and spread to other parts of your body, causing serious complications like meningitis. Severe listeriosis can cause a stiff neck, severe headache and tremors.
