Great news: Star Wars looks set to be filming scenes for Episode VIII in Donegal

Paul Moore

The O’Donnell County strikes back.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away a small movie named Star Wars: the Force Awakens decided to film off the coast of Kerry. Ok, it wasn’t that long ago but Luke Skywalker’s secret monastic haunt in Skellig Michael won’t be the only beautiful Irish location that’s seen throughout the galaxy.

It has been revealed that location scouts secretly visited Ireland’s most northerly point at Malin Head last October and the Minister of State at the Department of Arts Joe McHugh is confident of getting a deal done.

“There are still a few things to be sorted with the department including foreshore licenses but I’m confident that will be taken care of.  This will be a massive opportunity to promote the area globally and . . . I would welcome it. I would also see it as a superb opportunity to highlight the Wild Atlantic Way and all it has to offer.”

The news comes just days after it was confirmed that filming was also taking place on Ceann Sibéal on the western end of the Dingle Peninsula. It seems that the Force is strong with Ireland and why wouldn’t it be? Sure, we’re the only place where the Jedi can hang out in peace and have a few pints.
