The vote to reinstate Enda Kenny as Taoiseach has been defeated

Tony Cuddihy

The leader of Fine Gael only received 57 votes to become Taoiseach, less than a majority.

Enda Kenny has not received enough votes in the Dáil to become the next Taoiseach.

On the first day of business at the Oireachtas since the General Election on 26 February, Kenny received 57 votes, which RTÉ speculates to have been divided between 50 Fine Gael votes and Labour’s seven elected TDs.

The vote for Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin was next to take place, although none of the candidates were expected to reach the majority needed to assume office.

UPDATE: Micheál Martin’s appeal as Taoiseach has also been rejected after he received just 43 votes in favour and 108 against.
